A collection of photographs and experiences among the haunting beauty of the Lancashire wetlands

Meres are shallow, peaty bodies of water found in the boggy wetlands of northern Europe. These wetlands are stark places often overlooked by modern people and home only to wildlife, yet I’ve always felt a deep connection to them. The book details my search for lost connections to places that were once expansive habitats stretching far and wide, but now only remain as fragmentary relics of a time long since lost from human memory.

Despite the bleakness, these places feel innately magical and otherworldly, one can’t help but feel transported to a world long ago while staring into the black, inky pools of still water while egrets move like ethereal ghosts in the gloomy fug of a winter’s dawn.

Throughout the book I share my experiences of finding peace in the solitude among the reedbeds, spiritual places that blur the boundary between land and water, places where ancient people once laid offerings and sacrifices, places that still evoke a connection to the land.
